June 13, 2008 - Columbus State gets a gem, as does my alma mater

Two education-related notes for this week, and for once, it has nothing to do with our (ahem)
outstanding state schools superintendent or the CRCT disgrace:
First, congratulations to Columbus State University, which got a gem in Tim Mescon for its
vacant presidency. There is no finer gentlemen in Georgia's higher educational system than Mescon,
who has made a name for himself despite having an equally legendary father in Mike Mescon.
"For nearly two decades, Tim Mescon has worked tirelessly and with great success to build the
reputation, programs and outreach of KSU's Michael J. Coles College of Business. He has been
innovative and forward-thinking in his approach to business education. Under Tim's leadership,
Coles has become one of the best and biggest business school programs in the state and in the
country," said Kennesaw State President Daniel S. Papp.
"From the impressive faculty that he recruited, to the cultivation of high-profile alumni and
business leaders, to the extensive marketing efforts that he undertook, Tim pulled out all of the
stops to get the College recognized on the national map. We are extremely grateful for his immense
contributions to KSU, and wish him well as he assumes the presidency of Columbus State University."
Second, I suppose if I can't have Dan Reeves as my alma mater's head football coach, then
Bill Curry is just as fine. Like AD Mary McElroy, I was surprised when I learned that Curry was
interested in returning to coach the collegiate ranks. He got a raw deal at Alabama, as has
everyone else who came after the Bear. But Curry is the right man for my school, and I look forward
to seeing him coach my boys from my GSU football season ticket seats at the Dome.
